He worked as a surveyor in the Wellington area and in the Manawatu as did his brother James Climie and father Daniel Climie, an engineer who had previously worked on railways in Britain.Mount Climie was surveyed and named by one of them.

John Campbell Climie (1828–1916) was a Scottish-born engineer who worked in Australia and New Zealand. He designed and supervised construction of the Darebin Creek Bridge on the Heidelberg Road in 1863-4 and prepared the design for the 1869 stone arch bridge over Deep Creek Bulla.
